Couple dies in weekend wreck
A middle-aged Hartselle couple was killed in a motorcycle-car accident on Union Grove Road in rural Marshall County on Sunday afternoon.
The victims, Douglas Hake, 44, and wife Jennifer Hake, 43, were apparently killed instantly when the Suzuki M50 motorcycle they were riding collided with a Dodge Neon car in a curve about 200 yards from Sweet Home Baptist Church. The mishap occurred at approximately 4 p.m. and the deaths were pronounced at the scene by Marshall County Coroner Marlon Killion.
The car’s driver, Jarrod Hand, 17, of Union Grove and two passengers, Latasha Lackey, 18, of Albertville and Haley Makinnon, 17, of Guntersville all sustained minor injuries. They were taken to Marshall Medical Center North where they were treated and released.
The Hake family had recently moved to Hartselle from Indiana. Mr. Hake was an employee at Bunge in Decatur and three of the couple’s four children were enrolled in Hartselle schools. Their oldest child remained in Indiana and is enrolled in college there.
The children, a junior and sophomore at Hartselle High and a fifth grader at F.E. Burleson Elementary, were at home when the accident occurred and school officials stood by at the family home until grandparents arrived.
Carr Funeral Home of Guntersville prepared the bodies for shipment to Decatur, Ind. for funeral and burial services.
The accident continues under investigation by State Troopers.
