Falkville native earns military honors
ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. — Falkville native and Senior Airman Cody Simpson, 28th Civil Engineering Squadron firefighter, was recently selected as the 2009 12th Air Force Outstanding Performer of the Year, Airman category.
Airman Simpson will go on to compete for an award at the Air Combat Command level.
“It’s a humbling experience,” he said. “I’m thankful to have been bestowed this great honor.”
Rapidly extinguishing a fire in a mortar-attacked building, completing his career development coursework 10 months ahead of schedule and actively supporting the 28th Bomb Wing’s SafeRide program are only a few of the accomplishments which earned Airman Simpson his award.
He also led a rescue on a smoke-filled home, rapidly extinguishing a smoldering fire that led to the recovery of a $168,000 family housing unit. Airman Simpson was also selected as the 28 BW Airman of the Quarter from July to September of 2009.
Airman Simpson said the opportunities he had at Ellsworth and his deployed location, combined with direction from his leadership, were what set him apart from the other candidates. He also attributed his success to an intense dedication to his job and the support of his wife and family.
He encourages Airmen just starting out in their career to “take advantage of the opportunities they are given, hit the ground running, stay focused, stay positive and stay the course.”
Airmen Simpson said he will continue to push forward by maintaining his work ethic and studying for his staff sergeant test.
and helping his fellow Airmen.
“This award recognizes sustained excellence,” said Col. Jeffrey Taliaferro, 28th Bomb Wing commander. “Excellence achieved through more than just hard work—an unrelenting desire to succeed in the face of many challenges.”
