Funeral for Nelson Montague “Monty” Cagle, 55, of Decatur was Tue., April 27, at 10 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stanley Reeves officiating.
Burial was in Memorial Gardens in Pontotoc, Miss.
Mr. Cagle died Fri., April 23, 2010, at Huntsville Hospital. He was born Dec. 20, 1954, in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., to Joseph F. Cable and Mary Jo Gilreth Cagle. He was a graduate of West Georgia College in Carrollton, Ga., where he met his wife, Lisa Miller Cagle. He was a columnist, reporter or editor at the Calhoun News Dispatch, Rome News Tribune, Northeast Miss-issippi Daily Journal, Claxton Enterprise, Chero-kee Tribune, West Georgia News and the Athens News-Courier. He was a regular contributor of letters to the editor in various newspapers while working as desk clerk at Knights Inn, NiteFall Motel and Pointe Mallard Inn in Decatur. For more than 30 years he was a rescuer of abandoned and abused animals who became his beloved companions. He was especially fond of his little dog, Dupre. He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents, Bradis and Ruth Cagle and Oliver Hugh and Vannie Pearl Gilreath.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa Miller Cagle of Decatur; his father, Joseph F. Cagle of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two brothers, Timothy E. Cagle of Soddy Daisy, Tenn. and Jerry A. Gilreath of Arkansas; two sisters, Susan C. Cagle of Chattanooga, Tenn. and Jennifer A. Bishop; and nephews, nieces, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Pallbearers were family members.
