People should have say on school board
Editor:
This letter is in reference to a front-page article in the (Decatur) Daily on April 11 reference to the candidates for State Rep. District 9 with pictures of Kathy Goodwin and Dwight Tankersley in the article. Both are against the people deciding if an appointed or an elected Board of Education is what they want. This in spite of over 800 names of Hartselle voters signing petitions asking for that right. These petitions were presented to Mayor Tankersley and the City Council and were finally approved by a vote of 4 to 1, although none of them want to give up this power to appoint.
This amendment will appear on our ballot in November and since 94 percent of all Boards of Education are elected nationwide, the people of Hartselle will vote accordingly. Mayor Tankersley wants to keep the appointed board. Some of that power with the City Council and the appointed board includes some strange incidents, as it remains ‘ the good old boy network.’ The most recent appointment was the wife of a former city councilman and this behavior happens over and over.
Ed Henry is for letting the people decide what they want. Remember this in the June primary and the November general election.
