Funeral for Richard Byrd, 83, of Decatur was Mon., May 3, at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Joel Snyder and Steve McCurry officiating.
Burial was in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.
Mr. Byrd died Thur., April 29, 2010. He was born Sept. 11, 1926, in Hartselle to Fletcher and Iva Byrd. He was a World War II veteran and served with the U.S. Army. He was employed for many years at Decatur Iron and Steel Company and Construction Services, Inc. He was preceded in death by his sons, Richard Gregory Byrd of St. Louis and an infant son, Gary Dwayne Byrd and his parents.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Gladys Lorance Byrd, a daughter, Karen Buzbee and husband Wesley of Birmingham; a daughter-in-law, Moira Byrd of St. Louis; a grandson, Richard C. Byrd; two granddaughters, Ellie Byrd and Rachel Buzbee McPhillips and husband John; two great-granddaughters, Addison McPhillips and Claire McPhillips; special honorary grandchildren, Sou-mya Kantamneni, Sidarth Kantamneni and Divya Kantamneni; two brothers, Fletcher Byrd Jr. and wife Nancy and Franklin R. Byrd and wife Sarah; two sisters, Edith Summerford and Madeline Penn and husband Larry; and two sisters-in-law, Lula Fuller and husband William and Sue Namie and husband Bob.
Pallbearers were Wes Buzbee, Richard C. Byrd, Fletcher Byrd Jr., William Fuller, Bob Namie and Steve Hill.
Honorary pallbearer was Franklin R. Byrd.
