Funny money no laughing matter
Phony money keeps turning up around Hartselle and Morgan County and police are looking for answers.
Last week, a suspect used a phony $100 bill at CVS and then tried to use another one at Fred’s. The suspect, who’s image was captured on surveillance cameras, is believed to have attempted to pass similar bills at other area stores.
According to Lt. Justin Barley of the Hartselle Police Department, the Secret Service is looking into the incidents. The US Secret Service is charged with investigating incidents of counterfeit money.
Barley said if you have information on the suspect, call him at 751-4917. Meanwhile, merchants should be vigilant when they take cash. Signs to look for include misprints, unclear borders on the edges of the money and differences in the paper quality. However, Barley said these latest fakes were of a higher quality than what’s been seen in the area in the past.
