A look back

May 27, 1960-Ninety-three seniors were presented diplomas tonight during graduation exercises at MCHS.  The 49th commencement was held in the J. C. Pettey gym and Rep. Albert Brewer of Decatur was the principal speaker.
May 27, 1960-Bettye Sue Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Williams, Hartselle 1, received her BS degree in secondary education during graduation exercises at Jacksonville State College today.
May 27, 1960-Four Hartselle young men are in jail today following their arrest for allegedly breaking into four local businesses-Groover Tractor Co., Bush’s Dairy Bar, Dutton’s Café, and the Trolley Diner.  They are being charged with second-degree burglary.
May 28, 1960-Dr. John D. Chandler of Block-Chandler Hospital is in Memphis this week taking a special course at the University of Tennessee Medical School.  The study is entitled “Nervousness as it Affects the Modern Person.”
May 28, 1960-Fred Speake had emergency surgery today at Hartselle Hospital.
May 28, 1960-Confirmation of his appointment to the position of postmaster of Hartselle came today to Hugh F. Penn in a telegram from U.S. Sens. John Sparkman and Lister Hill.  Penn has been acting postmaster for the last four years.
May 29, 1960-Hartselle youth participating in the Boy’s State program left today for Montgomery.  This year’s group includes Jimmy Speegle, Mickey Wiggins, Tommy Burns, and David Norwood.
May 29, 1960-Four Hartselle area students received degrees during commencement exercises at the University of Alabama today.  They were Robert Don Groover, Ruth Gail Cost, Virginia Roberts, and John D. Cloud.
May 30, 1960-A worker at Puckett’s Pure Oil station got a surprise this morning when he discovered a three-foot long coachwhip snake very much alive and kicking inside the casing of a tire he was get ready to fix.
May 31, 1960-Mrs. Leo Pettit, a member of the faculty of the University of Alabama, is spending the summer here with Mr. Pettit.
June 1, 1960—Mr. and Mrs. James E. Peck and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Peck returned tonight from Point Clear where they attended the annual convention of the Alabama Funeral Directors’ Association at the Grand Hotel.
June 1, 1960-Jesse Wayne Penn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Penn, Danville 1, received his BA in religion during graduation exercises today at Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C.
June 1, 1960-Eleanor Rausa became the bride of Ted Gibson tonight at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rausa, on East Main Street.
June 2, 1960-Luke Chasteen has been elected as president of the Hartselle Jaycees for the upcoming club year.
June 2, 1960-L. N. Whitman has been named to the staff at Hartselle Hospital.  Dr. Whitman will set up a pharmacy department and supply office.
June 2, 1960-Some staff changes will be made at MCHS during the 1960-61 school year.  Doyle Walker will teach physics, chemistry, and several of the biology classes.  Bobby Ray Hicks has resigned from the faculty in order to pursue his Masters degree.
June 2, 1960-Mrs. Reita King has returned from Ft. Worth, Tex., where she visited her sister, Mrs. Ila Jo Bishop and family.
June 2, 1960-Returning home this week from Auburn University to spend the summer with relatives are Mary Orr, Joyce Payne, Becky White, John Howell, Bowes Channell, John Sample, Charter Nicholson and Ted Williams.
June 2, 1960-Pvt. Jerry Putman of the U.S. Army is spending a two-week furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. U. H. Putman. Pvt. Putman will be stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., at the conclusion of his leave.
June 2, 1960-Doc Francis recently underwent the last of a series of three operations at Hartselle Hospital.  He is now recuperating at home.
June 2, 1960-Mr. and Mrs. Louis Cline Thompson announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Sarah Ann, to William Howard Evans Jr., son of Mr. and  Mrs. W. H. Evans.  Both Sarah Ann and Billy are Auburn University graduates.
