Letters to the editor
Editor:
My name is Sarah Hake, the mother and mother-in-law of Doug and Jenny, who were tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in Marshall County. For two weeks I have felt compelled to write this letter to provide you an update.
First of all, the kids are doing great. They just returned from Florida where they spent a few days with Jenny’s mom, dad and sister, who live there. I was glad they were able to spend Mother’s Day with them.
Christopher, 20, is going to start this third year of college towards his engineering degree. Jachary, 18, just got a part-time job at Pizza Hut, starting football practice and hanging out with friends. Sydnee, 16, is working part-time at Zesto, an ice cream parlor and is on the summer swim team. Ben, 11, has an incredible dry sense of humor which makes us all crack up. He loves his friends, his cousins and video games.
Dale, my loving rock who is now struggling with lawyers and paperwork (they had no will) and I raised five children, so each one of the kids has their own bedroom. Doug and Jenny literally lived in our back yard for 16 years; we gave them two acres to build on so there was no doubt the kids, and their dog, Sophie, should live with us.
As I was sitting outside the other night, it finally hit me. Our lives suddenly became a giant puzzle wherein the last three weeks so many pieces were put into place – happy, sad, miracle and wonderful pieces.
Hopefully at the end of our lives, this puzzle will be complete.
Our whole family was raised Catholic but I truly believe it doesn’t matter what religious you are as long as you believe in God and live a decent life. If it wasn’t for the Lord and your prayers, we would have never made it through this.
And lastly, our families back here learned totally what Southern hospitality is – incredible. We want to thank Sonya, Pat, Leslie, Judy and their spouses, wonderful Bunge where Doug worked, the school system, the neighbors, the Catholic church and Sister Mother Theresa in Decatur, all the kids who came to the house, people whom we never got to know are especially the prayers of strength for me and patience for Dale for about the next eight years.
I so wish you all would have gotten to know the family. They were awesome! The sad part was everything was starting to come together in Hartselle. You have a great community.
May God bless you all. And, for pity’s sake, all you young married couples out there, have a will.

HU and the city will miss Wayne Roberson
Editor:
To the general public in Hartselle and the surrounding areas, I would like to inform you of the retirement of a very important person in your city. The engineering services manager at Hartselle Utilities, Wayne Roberson, left May 28.
The people who have worked with him know how much he has contributed to the improvement in and around Hartselle. He has been watching over the details of all construction that has been done whether it is new businesses, subdivisions, utilities and so much more.
We will miss Wayne, but he has so many well wishes from all his Hartselle Utilities employees and friends. If you happen to cross his path, give him a handshake and a thank you for all his hard work in making your hometown a better place to live.
Wayne, congratulations to you on the next step in your life.
You will truly be missed and thought of often. Go out and have a wonderful life. Just don’t forget to come back and visit every now and then.
