A look back
June 17, 1960-The new movie “Wild River” has just premiered in Cleveland, Tenn. Hartselle folks are very anxious to see it because it is based on local author Bill Huie’s book “Mud on the Stars.” The film was directed by Elia Kazan and stars Montgomery Clift and Lee Remick.
June 17, 1960-Horace Broom graduated this afternoon from the advanced course in banking he has been taking recently at the Graduate Banking School at LSU.
June 18, 1960-Sandra Hardwick left today for Oklahoma City where she will be vacationing as the guest of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Tex Colvin.
June 18, 1960—Patsy Anne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Lambert, was married tonight to Bobby Dean Hargett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hargett, all Hartselle residents. Patsy is a recent graduate of MCHS. Bobby Dean is a 1957 MCHS graduate and currently works at Wolverine.
June 19, 1960-Rev. Sammy Stabler began preaching a revival at West End Methodist Church tonight. It will continue through Thursday night.
June 19, 1960—Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Strickland Jr., and children returned to Hartselle today after spending a week’s vacation in Panama City, Fla.
June 21, 1960-Mary Frances McCall was in Gardendale today where she attended the ordination of her cousin, I. A. Martin Jr., as a minister in the Baptist Church.
June 19, 1960-Mrs. Cora Sobotka, descendant of a pioneer Hartselle family, died at her home today.
June 20, 1960-Vacation Bible School began at Salem Methodist Church this morning. Mrs. Benard Chasteen is serving as principal of the school. Rev. Odie Gregg is the church’s minister.
June 21, 1960-The Crepe Myrtle Garden Club met this afternoon at the home of Mrs. Jim Cain.
June 21, 1960-A daughter was born today to Mr. and Mrs. William Sterbutzel in Morgantown, W. Va. Mrs. Sterbutzel is the former Helen Howell.
June 21, 1960-Today was the first day of summer. The high temperature was 92 degrees.
June 22, 1960-The office in the municipal building began closing at noon today. This policy will continue until September 7.
June 22, 1960-A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Horace Broom today at Hartselle Hospital.
June 22, 1960-Funeral services were held this afternoon at Hartselle First Baptist for Mrs. Mary Sue Freeman Morris who died Tuesday. Rev. W. L. Carden officiated and Lloyd Logan, Comer Tankersley, Clive Stephenson, T. B. Strickland Jr., Bobby Anders, and Luther Roberts served as pallbearers.
June 22, 1960-W. C. Debter Sr., the father-in-law of Mrs. Sarah Ann Bennett Debter of Muscle Shoals, formerly of Hartselle, died today in Shelbyville, Tenn.
June 23, 1960-Hartselle Mayor John Burleson has told an Enquirer reporter that he does not plan to be a candidate for another term as head of this city’s government.
June 23, 1960-Dr. James S. Martin has been elected president of the Northwest Alabama Optometric Association.
June 23, 1960-Rev. Billy Carl Sparkman, a MCHS and Birmingham-Southern College graduate, has been assigned to be the pastor of Summit Avenue Methodist Church in Jersey City, N.J.
June 23, 1960-A new addition to Block-Chandler Hospital is well under way. Mrs. Berval Bennett, hospital administrator, told the Enquirer that a decision has yet to be made regarding keeping open the Block-Chandler annex in downtown Hartselle or abandoning it.
June 23, 1960-Dr. Troy Kilpatrick moved to Hartselle today. He will begin his medical practice on July 1 at Doctor’s Clinic.
June 23, 1960-Several Hartselle Christians went to Decatur tonight to hear Dr. Bob Jones, founder of Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C., who is in the area to encourage Bible believers to share their faith more enthusiastically.
