June 24, 1960-Mrs. John H. (Buddy) Howell of Hartselle was awarded $12,500 in a Huntsville court today. She had sued the other party as a result of a wreck that happened in Madison County early last year. Her husband was killed in the accident.
June 25, 1960-Hartselle Evangelist Junior Hill spoke at a countywide youth rally at Westside Baptist in Decatur tonight.
June 25, 1960-Andrew A. Oden, a Hartselle accountant, tonight was elected president of the Mid-South Khorassan Society of the Knights of Pythias during the group’s convention in El Dorado, Ark.
June 25, 1960-Dr. W. H. Block was in Point Clear today for the annual meeting of the Alabama Heart Association.
June 26, 1960—Morgan County State Rep. Bob Harris predicts that Sen. John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts won’t do well here in November if the Democrats nominate him for president at their convention next month. Continuing religious prejudice is cited as the main factor working against JFK.
June 26, 1960-County Agent Charles Rutledge is seeking to identify young women who would like to compete in this year’s maid of cotton contest, which will be held in the MCHS gym on July 23.
June 26, 1960-State Sen. Ryan deGraffenried of Tuscaloosa is increasing the number of his appearances this area. It’s no secret that he’s planning to run for governor in a couple of years as is Judge George Wallace of Clayton.
June 26, 1960-Beverly June Ellenberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Neal Ellenburg, is now a full one-year-old. Her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ellenburg, also reside here in Hartselle.
June 26, 1960-A tragic hit-run auto accident took the life of a two-year-old boy on Highway 36 east of here tonight. The victim was Charles Keener, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Keener.
June 27, 1960-The Morgan County governing board met this morning at the courthouse. Clyde Maples, the commissioner representing the Hartselle area, says he expects work on the Barkley Bridge improvement project to begin just as soon as he gets a work order from the state highway department.
June 27, 1960-Probably the best-known Alabamian worldwide, Miss Helen Keller, celebrated her 80th birthday today at her home in Connecticut. Alabama Governor John Patterson has proclaimed today to be “Helen Keller Day” in the state.
June 28, 1960—Mr. and Mrs. Scott Stone are currently in Miami Beach attending the 45th annual convention of Kiwanis International.
June 28, 1960-The body of a Gadsden man was discovered in Flint Creek near the Hartselle water plant this afternoon.
It was speculated that the man might have been walking on the railroad bridge when he fell into the creek and drowned a couple of days ago.
June 29, 1960-Rev. Junior Hill, Hartselle evangelist, is currently conducting a revival at Austinville Baptist.
Church officials say the revival will last as long as people are responding to the preaching of the gospel.
June 30, 1960-A traffic crackdown is set for the Fourth of July weekend. So local police will have more than just one car to use, Mayor John Burleson is loaning the cops his car.
The mayor said he wants this city to do whatever it can to “help slow some of this slaughter on the highways.”
June 30, 1960-Local people who work for the federal government won’t be getting a pay raise anytime soon. President Eisenhower today vetoed a bill that would have given these employees a 7 1/2 per cent salary boost.
June 30, 1960-It is expected that Hartselle’s phone prefix Spruce will be phased out by 1962. At that point all phone numbers will consist of three numbers followed by four more additional digits, e.g., 773-4271.
