Camp ‘Art’-selle creates fun time for youngsters
Three young artists are focused on completing an art assignment during Monday’s Camp “Art”-selle session.
Summer vacation took an exciting and fun-filled turn for 74 Hartselle youngsters as they danced, sang, acted and drew pictures at the fifth annual Camp”Art”-selle at Hart-selle Fine Arts center. June 21-24.
Performing to the theme “Downtown Divas and Sirs,” campers participated in a group rotation of classes that covered music, drama, dancing and art, lasting from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In music classes, students were led in the singing of “Uptown Girl” and “Sweet Home Alabama” by teachers Debbie Queen and Debbie Johnston. Drama teachers Dan Bennich, Sonja McKelvey and Jane Walker taught acting classes based on “Our Town” snippets of Hartselle history.
At the same time, students high-stepped and twirled to a variety of dance numbers under the direction of Jenny Faulk, Jeni Abercrombie and Samantha Davis.
Artist Michael Ballew guided his students in a study of abstract painting featuring the works of Georgia O’Keefe and Arthur Dove.
The study was climaxed with printmaking. Assist-ing him were Michelle Wilson, Lisa Shelton and Jenise Filiatrault.
“The kids really get involved and put a lot of effort into what they’re doing no matter what class they’re in,” said Angel Rollins, co-director. “They show a lot of excitement and have a good time. Plus, what they learn about the arts is a bonus.”
Kelly Redmond is serving as camp director. Working with Rollins as a co-director is Jessica Halverson.
Serving as camp aides were 25 Hartselle High students.
