A look back: July 1-7
July 1, 1960-Today marks the first full day of retirement for Col. Joe W. Burleson, a native of Hartselle. Services in recognition of Col. Burleson’s distinguished military career were held at Fort Polk, La., yesterday, where he had previously been serving as post commander.
July 1, 1960-Kay Kimbrough, 11, daughter of Mrs. Ann Kimbrough, is continuing to recover from an attack by a full-grown, 200-pound St. Bernard dog a few days ago. The dog was owned by neighbors of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Speake. Kay suffered eight puncture wounds and her doctor had to take 40 stitches.
July 1, 1960-Jan Puckett is at the Methodist Camp Sumatanga this week.
July 1, 1960-Alabama House Speaker Virgil Ashworth resigned as speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives today to take a judicial appointment from Governor John Patterson. Morgan County Representative Albert Brewer is expected now to seek the vacated post.
July 1, 1960-Morgan County Superintendent of Education Lester Wooten is currently in Los Angeles attending the annual convention of the National Education Association.
July 1, 1960-Some time tonight thieves in Falkville tore a telephone from the booth in which it was located. W. H. Partlow, who owns the local phone company, estimated that the phone contained about $30 and that it will cost approximately $170 replace.
July 1, 1960-At the close of trading today, the DJIA stood at 641.30.
July 2, 1960—Block-Chandler Hospital has recently added two new technicians and three additional nurses to its staff.
July 2, 1960-The Hartselle Church of Christ has an expansion project currently underway. The front of the building will be modernized and the auditorium will be enlarged. Lloyd Kyle is the contractor for the work.
July 3, 1960-Mr. and Mrs. Alfred F. Sanders announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Bettye Ann, to Rev. James C. White, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James C. White of Priceville.
Bettye is a graduate of MCHS and is now employed at Citizens Bank Rev. White serves as minister at Pines Baptist Church and also works at Redstone.
July 3, 1960-Many Morgan County gospel singing enthusiasts drove out to Caddo in Lawrence County today for the semiannual meeting of that county’s singing convention. Cullie Gibson is the convention leader.
July 3, 1960—Morgan County sheriff’s deputies stopped 10 people this weekend for operating motor vehicles without valid drivers’ licenses.
July 4, 1960-Every city office and most stores were closed here in Hartselle today in observance of the Fourth of July.
July 4, 1960-The American flag officially had 50 stars today as Hawaii formally entered the Union. Gradually, over time, Hartselle flags will be replaced to reflect the U.S.A.’s newest state. No civic or other July Fourth celebrations occurred in Hartselle this year.
July 5, 1960-Funeral services were held today at the Hartselle Church of Christ for Mrs. Salllie Burns, 60, who died at her home yesterday. Rites were conducted by Mr. Charles Stedham, with Trenton Hill, Bill Bean, Dr. Sam Martin, Thurman Pittman, Franklin Morris, and Ed Harris serving as pallbearers.
July 5, 1960-Mrs. Walter Turner, 206 Railroad Street, has had to be hospitalized today due to illness.
July 6, 1960-The Hartselle city council has decided to let the PTA’s of local schools deliberate the matter of establishing a separate school system for Hartselle. The aldermen determined that the complexities involved in a transition to a city school system are too great for them to handle at this point.
July 7, 1960-Mr. and Mrs. Larry Raridon, 213 Cedar St., announce the birth of a daughter today at Decatur General Hospital.
July 7, 1960-Hugo Yancey of Flint, Mich., is currently in Hartselle for a visit with his sister, Mrs. Joe Puckett, and other relatives.
