Funeral for Roy Slaten, 64, of Thompsonville, Ill., formerly of Morgan County, was Wednesday, June 30, at 1 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Taylor officiating.
Burial was in Cheatham Cemetery.
Mr. Slaten died Sunday, June 27, 2010, at his residence. He was born July 1, 1945, in Decatur to Street Willis Wise and Claytie Mae Norris Slaten. He was a business oriented man who operated his own roofing business for 33 years. He then built his wife, Nancy, a motel known then as HoJo Inn and later changed to the American Classic Inn. His love for animals drove him back to the country life where he raised Charolais beef cattle. He also enjoyed horseback riding and fishing. He will be remembered as a loving husband, grandfather and a friend to many. He and his wife were married for almost 46 years. They ran a cab company, tomato business and roofing business together. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and a brother.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Slaten of Thompsonville, Ill.; a daughter, Laura Machelle Walters; a granddaughter raised as his daughter, Scottie M. Slaten; two granddaughters, Montanna and Makenna Walters; his father-in-law, David I. Perdue; a special niece, Rhonda K. Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers wee Mickey Brown Sr., Mickey Brown Jr., Mitchell Beard, Franklin Eugene Slaten Jr., Carl Turrentine and Donovan Gilliland.
