July 8, 1960—Mr. and Mrs. Cline Thompson and Glenn have returned from a visit to their son and brother, Joe Thompson and family, in Spartanburg, S.C.
July 8, 1960—Mr. and Mrs. Billy Don Mitchell and children, Mr. and Mrs. James Howell Stephenson and children, and Mrs. T. E. Kimbrough Jr., and children are currently vacationing in Panama City, Fla.
July 9, 1960-Both the Hartselle Jaycees and Jayceettes installed new officers tonight at a banquet at the Holiday Inn. Luke Chasteen is the new leader of the Jaycees. Norma Penn is president of the Jayceettes.
July 9, 1960-Karl Estes of Shelbyville, Tenn. is spending the weekend with his mother, Mrs. Marie Wright, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. McClanahan.
July 10, 1960-Billy Joe Shipp, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Ferrell Shipp, died today. Graveside services will be held tomorrow morning at Hartselle Cemetery with Rev. W. L. Carden officiating.
July 10, 1960-The Morgan County Singing Convention met today at Rock Creek Baptist Church east of Eva. Grady Parker was elected president of the convention. Other officers are Bud Reid, vice president; Eddie Minor, secretary-treasurer; Herschel Brown, chaplain; and Virginia Bodley, pianist. Eighty directors were used during the day.
July 11, 1960-The July business meeting of the W.S.C.S. of First Methodist was conducted this morning. Mrs. H. E. Orr is president.
July 11, 1960-Ollie Camp, W. B. Harvel, and W. A. Hargrove left Birmingham by jet plane tonight for Denver, where they will attend the International Shrine Convention.
July 12, 1960-Today was “Hartselle Day” on Birmingham’s Channel 13. Local residents and photos of the city were featured. Individuals presented on TV included Chamber President Charlie Beene, recent MCHS valedictorian Carolyn Hartselle, and star athlete Jimmy Speegle.
July 12, 1960-School trustees were nominated for Hartselle schools tonight. The candidates for MCHS are Dr. Harold Blanton, E. E. Maddox, Edward Summers, Rev. W. P. Maxwell, James Yarbrough, and Grady Long; for Hartselle Elementary School, Howard Fowler, Edward Summers, Mrs. Jo Chandler, L. F. Williams, James H. Stephenson, and T. B. Strickland Jr.; and for Crestline Elementary School, Clyde Rice, Arthur Bean, Paul Weinman, Howell Hogan, Charles Pickens, and Phil Fitzgerald. The county board of education will now select the three individuals who will actually serve in these positions. They must be parents or guardians of children who attend the schools for whom they will serve as trustees.
July 12, 1960-Five young Morgan County men were in Montgomery today for pre-induction physicals. Assuming they pass, they will be drafted into the U.S. Army.
July 13, 1960-Rev. Warren Hamby, pastor of the First Methodist Church, is currently at Lake Junaluska, N.C., for the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference of his denomination.
July 13, 1960-Mrs. John E. Guier and daughter, Cherie, arrived home tonight from a three-month tour of Europe. Mr. Guier will return at the end of next week.
July 14, 1960-Kuhn’s newly remodeled store had its grand opening today. The variety business is located at the corner of Main and Sparkman streets. Kuhn’s has taken over the old Western Auto Store next to it. Mrs. Freda Moore is the store manager. Sandra Fitzgerald is one of the newer employees.
July 14, 1960—Mr. and Mrs. Eaton Roberts announce the engagement of their daughter, Martha Lynn, to Don Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Brown of Dothan. Martha Lynn is a student at Huntingdon College in Montgomery. Don attended both the University of Alabama and Huntingdon. The wedding will be at First Methodist here on Sept. 2.
