A look back
Sept. 2, 1960-Local schools opened for the 1960-61 academic year today. All faculty positions are filled. The schools, especially MCHS, are expecting record enrollments and the old problem of overcrowded classrooms and high pupil-teacher ratios are almost sure to exist again this year.
Sept. 2, 1960-The local United Fund goal this year is $6,000. Hugh F. Penn, postmaster and head of the William Penn Mortgage Loan Co., will direct the Hartselle campaign.
Sept. 2, 1960-Wayne Summerford has returned to Marshall, Tex., where he is employed by Thiokol Chemical Co.
Sept. 3, 1960-The Hartselle Jaycees sponsored a “City Park Day” on radio station WHRT today in an effort to raise money for construction work they have started in the park. Howell Hogan is the current club president.
Sept. 3, 1960-Hartselle Methodists have now closed a deal to purchase the property on the south side of Hickory Street between Sloss and Hammett Streets. The property acquired includes the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Kesecker-the old Arthur Stephenson place. Long range church plans call for razing the home and the erection of a new sanctuary on its site.
Sept. 3, 1960-Mrs. Jo Chandler, a graduate in law, is now working part-time in the legal office of A. J. Coleman, a Decatur attorney and referee in bankruptcy.
Sept. 4, 1960-Danny Rollins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Rollins, who had heart surgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore on July 29, is now able to recuperate back at home. More details about the operation Danny went through are now available. During the surgery his blood was pumped by an artificial heart and he had blood as needed from 20 potential donors. He will return to Baltimore for a checkup in December. Danny’s happiest souvenir from his time in Maryland is a baseball personally autographed by leading members of the Orioles team.
Sept. 4, 1960-Dr. Bob Sittason has been named president of the Hartselle Athletic Boosters Club for 1960-1961. Rev. W. P. Maxwell will be vice-president and Charlie Beene the secretary-treasurer.
Sept. 5, 1960-Most Hartselle businesses-except for grocery stores—were closed today in observance of Labor Day. Barber shops are taking a longer break and will be closed tomorrow as well.
Sept. 5, 1960-Andrew A. Oden has been appointed to the Knights of Pythias Youth Council.
Sept. 5, 1960-A city poll list is currently being drawn up-said to be the first in Hartselle’s history. Hartselle is divided into five boxes.
Sept. 6, 1960-Mrs. Zelda Ashcraft celebrated her 80th birthday with family and friends today. Mrs. Ashcraft was born on this date in 1880. Her daughter, Mrs. Letha Ashcraft Houston, will have her birthday on this same date a month from now.
Sept. 6, 1960-After a nine-year absence from Hartselle, Eliza Whitten has returned to Kuhn’s 5c, 10c and 25c Store as assistant manager and personnel director. She has been associated with Kuhn’s since 1924.
Sept. 7, 1960-Strickland Drugs is now affiliated with the Walgreen group of drug stores. The ownership and management of the store remains completely in the hands of Messrs. T. B. Strickland Jr., and Sr.
Sept. 8, 1960-registration was today for Mrs. Cline Thompson’s kindergarten. Mrs. Kenneth Sharrott opened her pre-school program today as well.
Sept. 8, 1960-West Hartselle Baptist Church will undertake a bond issue with the purpose of borrowing money from individuals to build a much-needed new educational unit.
