Sept. 16, 1960—-Tommy Putman was discharged from Johns Hopkins University Hospital this morning. He and his mother will remain in Baltimore for two additional weeks, however, so that doctors can continue to monitor his heart condition prior to their return to Hartselle by train at the last of Sept.
Sept. 16, 1960-Edward Cooper continues to recuperate well from spinal surgery performed a week ago at University Hospital in Birmingham.
Sept. 16, 1960-Sylvia Ann Adcock, a student at Florence State College, was named to the honor roll for the summer quarter. Ann Hoffhaus Crane qualified for the summer quarter dean’s list at Auburn University.
Sept. 17, 1960-A Kiwanis Club bake sale was held at Pettit Cleaners today. All Kiwanian wives baked pies and cakes in order to help their member husbands get funds for the numerous civic projects undertaken each year by the club. Scott Stone is the club president.
Sept. 17, 1960-Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Stoner were in Birmingham tonight to attend the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra concert.
Sept. 17, 1960-Alabama played Georgia at Birmingham’s Legion Field today, a game that was witnessed by football fans around the country since it was nationally televised. Local Tide fans were thrilled with Bama’s 21-6 victory over the Bulldogs.
Sept. 17, 1960-The MCHS football Tigers ran roughshod over Athens tonight, defeating the Eagles by the score of 38-0. This was MCHS’s first victory over Athens in 12 years.
Sept. 17, 1960-Sandra Bennett was selected to model clothes from a Huntsville clothing store in a fashion show at that city’s Dale’s Restaurant tonight.
Sept. 18, 1960-Bill Stewart left today for Washington, D.C., where he will attend George Washington University this year.
Sept. 18, 1960-The Elia Kazan film “Wild River” began a two-day run at the Rodeo Theatre in downtown Hartselle today. The movie represents a synthesis of famed local writer William Bradford Huie’s book “Mud on the Stars” with a book by Scottsboro’s Borden Deal having a similar setting in the Tennessee Valley.
Sept. 18, 1960—Mr. and Mrs. Billy Don Mitchell and Hubert Mitchell were in Knoxville, Tenn., today to attend funeral services for their brother, the late Laurie Mitchell.
Sept. 19, 1960-Grady Long won in a landslide today to be the next mayor of Hartselle. Long received 826 votes, almost three times more than his nearest competitor, Orville W. Tanner, who got 294 votes. Robert Street was third was 211 votes. Among aldermanic candidates, John Long was tops with 969 votes. He was followed by Troy L. Nunn, W. H. “Hal” Hogan, Dr. David Chandler, and Lloyd Logan.
Sept. 19, 1960-The first Crestline PTA meeting of the new school year was held today. The room count award went to Mrs. Ruth Huie’s first grade.
Sept. 19, 1960-Falkville elected a new mayor today. John M. Cloud defeated Rushon D. Gibbons, collecting 121 of 200 votes cast. Austin Couch was high man for the city council with 179 votes.
Sept. 20, 1960-John B. Kirk, 52, of Hartselle died today. Funeral services will be tomorrow at the Hartselle Church of Christ with Bro. Charles Stidham officiating. Pallbearers will be Dr. Kenneth Swafford, Herman Myers, Dr. Sam Martin, Jimmy Nesmith, S. E. Johnson, and E. O. Creel.
Sept. 21, 1960-The Book Lovers’ Club met today in the home of Mrs. T. E. Kimbrough Jr. Mrs. Van B. Glasscock served as co-hostess. The Current Review Club met in Mrs. C. Y. Quinn’s home, Mrs. Robert Stephenson being the co-hostess. There were two guests at this afternoon’s meeting, Mrs. Robert Peck and Mrs. Joe Speake.
