Oct. 7, 1960-The United Fund drive is lagging. The Hartselle goal is $6,000 but only a fraction of this amount has been raised thus far.
Oct. 7, 1960-Italyne Hardwick’s guest for the past two weeks has been Lucile Peshek of Oklahoma City.
Oct. 8, 1960—Mr. and Mrs. Don Brown of Montgomery are spending the weekend with Mrs. Brown’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Roberts.
Oct. 8, 1960-Hartselle city employees have been assured by the new incoming administration that they will be allowed to keep their jobs. The only change is that Mayor Grady Long, who is a lawyer, will take over as city attorney.
Oct. 9, 1960-Decatur Transit Co. has purchased Rodgers & Rodgers Bus Lines, according to previous owner William E. “Buddy” Rodgers. The line has three drivers who will remain employed. This transaction doesn’t affect the taxi end of Rodgers’ business. He had operated the bus lines since 1945 when he came out of the service as a pilot in World War II.
Oct. 9, 1960-New Hartselle City Councilman Lloyd E. Logan celebrated his 46th birthday today with family and friends.
Oct. 10, 1960-Room mothers have been announced for Mrs. Opal Stewart’s class at Crestline Elementary School. They are Mrs. J. O. McGhee, Mrs. Billy Hampton, Mrs. L. C. Stephenson, Mrs. J. F. England, and Mrs. Ferrell Shipp.
Oct. 11, 1960-A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Scott P. Stone at Block-Chandler Hospital today.
Oct. 11, 1960-Mayor’s Court was busy in Hartselle today with its biggest docket ever. Sixteen men showed up to pay fines totaling $453. The new mayor has initiated a vigorous law enforcement program.
Oct. 11, 1960-Walter F. “Bill” Broadhead passed away today. He owned Broadhead-Cook furniture stores in Hartselle and four other north Alabama towns.
The former Green & Stein furniture store was taken over by Broadhead in 1956.
Oct. 11, 1960-Her fellow teachers and students honored Evelyn Howell today on her birthday. She is one of the most popular instructors at Hartselle Elementary School.
Oct. 12, 1960-Mrs. Joe Speake, Mrs. Richard Stoner, and Mrs. David Chandler were in Huntsville today to attend the alumnae tea for Chi Omega sorority.
Oct. 12, 1960-Mayor Grady Long has announced the city council committees that will supervise the different departments of local government. The chairmen and the areas they will superintend are John D. Long (police and fire), W. H. Hopper (streets), Dr. John D. Chandler (health and sanitation), Lloyd E. Logan(electric), Troy L. Nunn (water, gas, and power; also finance, public improvement, and recreation).
Oct. 12, 1960-Mrs. L. H. Houston is in Huntsville today to attend a meeting of the Garden Club of Alabama.
Oct. 12, 1960-Mrs. Hattie Lewis Shaneyfelt, 78, died this morning at her residence on McGough Street. Funeral services will be Friday at First Methodist.
Oct. 13, 1960-The Morgan County Baptist Association met tonight and will assemble again tomorrow night. The group’s moderator is Rev. John Ingouf and the vice moderator the Rev. W. L. Carden. Treasurer is Grady J. Long, the new Hartselle mayor.
Oct. 13, 1960-Tony Curtis and Debbie Reynolds, Hollywood’s favorite young couple, are starring in “The Rat Race,” which is showing tonight and tomorrow night at the Rodeo Theatre in downtown Hartselle. The Ranch Drive-in is featuring “Sex Kittens Go to College.”
