Danville unable to slow down West Morgan backs
TRINITY – The running combination of Antonio Little and Demetrius Warren proved to be more than Danville could overcome as the Hawks lost 34-20 to West Morgan last Friday night in Trinity.
Little and Warren combined for just under 300 yards and four touchdowns as the Rebels moved their record to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in Class 3A, Region 8.
The game began with each team’s defense dominating the line of scrimmage.
West Morgan was able to win the battle for field position and eventually the Rebels took advantage as Little ran 39 yards for the game’s first score. The extra point attempt failed and West Morgan held a 6-0 first quarter lead.
Danville took the lead late in the opening quarter on a 22-yard catch-and-run by senior WR Thomas Russell.
Lawrence Jacko added the extra point to give the Hawks a 7-6 lead.
Unfortunately for the Hawks it would be their last points until the midway point of the fourth quarter.
The second and third quarters belonged to West Morgan as the Rebels put 28 points on the board.
A 7-yard pass from William Jackson to Aaron Oyervidez put West Morgan ahead for good. Little added the 2-point conversion on a run and the Rebels led 14-7.
Warren ended the scoring in the first half going in from eight yards out and West Morgan took a 20-7 lead into halftime.
West Morgan extended its lead to 34-7 as Little scored on runs of 62 and one yard respectively.
The Hawks scored twice in the fourth quarter on a 58-yard punt return by Clint McAbee and a 1-yard run by junior Caleb Hill.
In addition to his touchdown run, Hill completed 19 of 35 passes for 168 yards on the night.
With the loss Danville fell to 1-3 in the region and 2-4 overall.
The Hawks will host region rival Elkmont tomorrow night at Smith-Owens Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
