Traffic limits school work times
Site preparation work for the new Hartselle High School will be limited to hours when F.E. Burleson Elementary School students are not en route to and from school, Project Manager Brian Moore reported to Hartselle school board members at a regular meeting Monday, Oct. 25.
Moore said movement of construction equipment to and from the site will be restricted to the hours between 8:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. or after 3:30 p.m.
“We’ll keep the big dump trucks off the roads during peak school traffic periods,” Moore said. “That’s part of the agreement we have with the contractor, Baggett Construction Co.”
The first phase of site preparation will involve the removal and storage of topsoil on site, building the base for parking lots and an access road and getting the building pad ready for construction. Eight acres of wetlands will be off limits until a construction permit is received from the U.S. Corps of Engineers.
Nathan Tumberlin, PE, project manager for the architectural firm of Goodwin, Mills and Cawood, said the permit process is on track and should be completed in a few days.
When asked about the condition and disposition of the subsoil on the 55-acre site, Moore said a lot of the dirt is structurally sound and can be used for back-fill if remediated.
“The dirt belongs to the contractor,” he said. “It will be up to them to decide the most cost-effective way to use it.”
