Funeral for Rev. Oliver Hayes, 89, of Hartselle was Sun., Nov. 7, at 3 p.m. at Cullman Heritage Chapel with the Revs. Dave Melson, Aaron Coffey and Greg Story officiating.
Burial was in Cullman Heritage Cemetery.
Rev. Hayes died Fri., Nov. 5, 2010, at his residence. He was born April 14, 1921, near Russellville to Marion and Elizabeth Oliver. At 19 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and after overseas duty returned home to marry his high school sweetheart, Wilma Poynor, in July, 1945. While stationed at Great Lakes Naval Base, they attended Chicago Gospel Tabernacle, where he was saved. They joined Northside Church of the Nazarene in Chicago and during this time the Lord called him into full-time ministry. He attended Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville from 1947-1951. He received a B.A. degree in 1951 and in 1952 was ordained. He pastored churches from 1951 to 2005 all over Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi..
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Oliver, two daughters, Karen Jean Himes of Indiana and Sandy Heatherly of Hartselle; five grandchildren, Mike Best and wife, Patty, K.C. Shuford and husband Danny, Leslie Daniels and husband Dave, Lisa Warner and husband Josh and Nick Heatherly and wife Marilyn; 12 great-grandchildren, Lauren Shuford, Alex Halloran, Matthew Warner, Ryan Daniels, Rebekah Daniels, Eve Heatherly, Hayes Heatherly, Ashley Halloran, Michael Daniels, Lilliana Daniels, Sam Warner and Ben Warner.
