Darling, Thompson lead Priceville to OT win
MOULTON – Priceville overcame a lackluster first quarter to beat Lawrence County 58-54 in overtime Thursday night on the road.
The Lady Bulldogs outscored Lawrence County 6-2 in overtime to get past the Lady Devils.
Priceville improved to 2-1 after claiming the win despite falling behind 18-8 in the first quarter.
“I was proud that we cranked it up and got back into the game,” said Priceville head coach Catrina Mason. “We’ve played three 5A teams to start the season and they’ve all been close and we’ve won two of the three.
“We still have a long way to go, but I’m proud that we’ve been competitive with some very good 5A programs.”
Presley Darling scored a game-high 24 points with 18 coming in the second half to lead the Lady Bulldogs. She also had 10 rebounds.
Molly Thompson added 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Amber Smith chipped in with 12 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.
Thompson scored two buckets midway through the overtime period to give Priceville a 56-52 advantage, but seventh-grader Rachel Childress kept Lawrence County in the game with a jumper from just inside the 3-point line.
Childress’ bucket provided all of Lawrence County’s overtime points.
Darling capped the win with a final bucket with 1:13 remaining in overtime.
After trailing for most of the first half, Thompson scored with 11 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give Priceville a 24-23 lead.
Priceville outscored Lawrence County 16-5 in the second quarter to battle back from the double-digit deficit.
The two teams traded leads in the second half before Darling drove the baseline with 25 seconds left in regulation to give Priceville a 52-51 advantage.
Jaszlyn Fossett hit a free throw with six seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
