Dec. 9, 1960-Grace Norris won five crisp new one hundred-dollar bills this afternoon in the first of the Hartselle Christmas cash drawings. One had to be present to win and about 2,000 were when Grace’s number was called out.
Dec. 9, 1960-Alabama’s distinguished U.S. Senator and Hartselle native John Sparkman spoke in his hometown tonight. Friends of the Library sponsored the address.
Dec. 9, 1960—Mr. and Mrs. Robert Orr of Montgomery are enjoying their new baby born a few days ago. His paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Leon Orr of Hartselle.
Dec. 10, 1960-The Hartselle post office was open all day today to facilitate the mailing of Christmas packages. It will be open all day next Saturday as well.
Dec. 10, 1960-Brenda Pirkle has been named state winner of the 4-H Club leadership project for girls. Brenda, 16, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Pirkle, Falkville 4.
Dec. 11, 1960-The chorus of First Baptist Church presented “Christmas in Song” tonight.
Dec. 11, 1960-Charles “Wesley” Bostick has been named youth minister at Hartselle First Methodist. He is currently a senior at Athens College.
Dec. 12, 1960-The MCHS Youth for Christ group now has a weekly program on Hartselle radio station WHRT. Dale Quillen, the publicity chairman for the YFC group, hosts it. He “spreads the word” about YFC and its current activities. Already YFC has built a small chapel in the new school annex where students may go to meditate or pray.
Dec. 12, 1960-MCHS yearbooks for the 1960-61 school year are now on sale.
The annuals cost $3.50 and orders may be placed with Sandra Bennett or Sandra Fitzgerald. It is anticipated that the forthcoming “Morcohi” will be larger and more elaborate than previous editions.
Dec. 13, 1960-Doris Jean Whetstone, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Whetstone, was recently initiated into Delta Sigma Theta sorority at Knoxville (Tenn.) College where she is a sophomore majoring in music.
Dec. 13, 1960-Unfortunately, Decatur was able to win easily (52-30) tonight over the MCHS basketball Tigers in a game played there.
The local team had previously been undefeated, but this time no player scored in double figures.
Dec. 13, 1960-Hartselle Elementary’s PTA had its Christmas program today, “The Choirs of God.”
Dec. 14, 1960-Another wonderful Kid’s Day was enjoyed by about 500 Hartselle children today.
Dec. 14, 1960-The Christmas meeting of the Current Review Club was held this afternoon in the home of Mrs. W. C. Duncan. Mrs. W. K. Stephenson of Decatur gave the program, “The Story of Christmas in Illustration and Song.” Mrs. Joe Speake was a guest at the meeting.
Dec. 15, 1960-The Booster Club hosted members of the football team, coaches, and guests at the annual banquet tonight. The featured speaker was Coach Gene Stallings, a key member of Coach Bear Bryant’s staff at the University of Alabama.
Dec. 15, 1960-Students at home or soon to arrive to spend the Christmas holidays with homefolks include Mary Orr, Joyce Payne, Becky White, and Bowes Channel, Auburn University; Jeff Tanner, Mike Roberts, Bill Hartselle, and Don Groover, the University of Alabama; and Nancy Warren, Sylvia Adcock, Maxine Johnson, Ronald Johnson, Jimmy Millwood, Franklin Penn, Skipper Drinkard, Charles Howell, Don Summerford, Joe Sims, and Dennis Griffith, Florence State College.
Dec. 15, 1960-Hoyt Cloer is now at back at Stewart Bros. Motor Co. after a two-year stint in the U.S. and Korea as a member of the U.S. Army. He is an excellent transmission man and has three years’ prior experience at Stewarts’.
