Try your hand at some Christmas trivia
Mom’s Corner
Ready for some more trivia? I think everyone who knows me knows I love Christmas. I love celebrating the birth of my Savior! I also enjoy the decorations. I know Christmas trees did not originate from Christianity, but to me they are traditionally a part of Christmas. Here are some interesting facts about Christmas trees.
Did you know that many parts of pines, spurces and firs can be eaten. For example, the needles are a good source of vitamin C. The pine nuts are also a good source of nutrition. There’s a new tradition for you after Christmas you can recycle the tree by eating it. (If we had a real tree I think I would just stick to giving it to fish somewhere for cover!)
The world’s leading exporter of Christmas trees also exports (ready for this?) blueberries and lobsters. The origin of the Christmas tree is Germany. They began bringing the Christmas trees into the house sometime in the 16th century. Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, introduced them to England. Credit for the first Christmas tree in the United States goes to a German family that settled in Pennsylvania. The first decorations were apples and nuts.
Since 1947 Norway has given Britain a Norwegian spruce as a token of friendship for Britain’s help during WWII. It is displayed in Trafalger square in London.
In the Ukraine, artifical spiders and along with webs are used as decorations. They believe that finding a spider web on a Christmas tree on Christmas morning is a sign of good luck.
Christmas trees have been sold commercially in the United States since 1850. Today there are approximately 37.1 million Christmas trees sold in the United States since 1991 artificial trees have out sold real ones.
Oregon is the leading producer of Christmas trees — 6.5 million in 2002! For every Christmas tree cut down at least three are planted. It takes 6 – 10 years for these trees to mature. There are approximately 21,0000 growers in the United States and there are more than 12,,000 cut your own Christmas Tree farms.
Now if someone could only tell me how to get rid of my husband’s and kid’s allergies so we could have a real one!
