Brewer sweeps Priceville
FLORETTE – Brewer’s varsity boys and girls basketball teams extended their unbeaten record against Priceville’s Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs to 3-0 and 2-0, respectively, on Friday night at Randolph Ryan Gym.
The Patriots relied on tough defense and clutch free throw shooing in the fourth quarter to get by the Bulldogs, 54-45, for the third win in a row against their rivals. The Lady Patriots ran away from the Lady Bulldogs in the second half; outscoring them 47 to 25, and coming up with a 71-45 second straight win. Eight of their points were scored on free throws in the last two minutes of the contest.
Brewer’s boys extended their record to 7-4 while the Lady Patriots moved to 7-5.
In the boy’s game, Brewer led all the way, 17-13 after one period, 29-28 at halftime and 41-34 after three periods.
The Lady Patriots were down 10-12 after the first period but rebounded to take a 24-22 halftime lead.
“I knew it was going to be hard to win against a good, well-coached team three game s in a row, said Patriot head coach Sam Brown. I was afraid our kids would look past them to the two area games we have scheduled next week. But our defense played well and the team kept its composure when we got behind in the fourth quarter.”
Twins Jordan and Taylor Bowling paced the win with 20 and 15, points, respectively, and Jordan sank six straight free throws in the last two minutes. Matt Crowe scored nine points.
Matt Teague and John Hawkins led Priceville with 11 points each.
“We stressed speed and quickness in practice Wednesday because they lost it in two games earlier in the week,” said Lady Patriot’s head coach Ricky Allen. “They ran a lot and on Thursday we had our fastest and best practice of the season. I thought it showed in the fourth quarter and enabled us to pull away.”
Courtney Oldacre led Brewer with 19 points. Hannah Crawford followed with 17, Rheagan Harvey had 13 and Riley Northway had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Bulldogs got 18 points from Presley Darling, 14 from Morgan Ponder and 13 from Molly Thompson.
