Godwin is new system CEO
The chief financial officer for Saraland City Schools in Mobile County has been appointed to serve in the same position for Morgan County Schools beginning Jan. 3, 2011.
The Morgan County School Board picked John Godwin over two other finalists to follow Rodger Spillers who is retiring at the end of this month.
He has served in the position for 21 years.
The move was made at the board’s regular monthly meeting Dec. 8.
Two days prior, board members conducted public interviews with Godwin and Larry Vance, chief schools finance officer for Lauderdale County Schools and Jan Greenlee, assistant chief schools finance officer for Huntsville City Schools System.
The three finalists emerged from 21 applicants.
Godwin, a former financial counselor for Huntsville City Schools, said he set up Saraland’s finance department three years ago when it left the Mobile County School System.
The board thanked Spillers for his long tenure and many contributions to the school system and presented him with an engraved retirement plaque to shows its appreciation.
The board acted on other matters as follows:
• Approved the salary of incoming Superintendent Bill Hopkins Jr. at $109,064 plus actual expenses and made it subject to change with state mandated salary increases for school personnel.
• Approved an out-of- state field trip for Danville football players and chaperones to attend a post-season bowl game in New Orleans Dec. 18-19.
• Corrected the date of a previously approved out-of-state field trip for Falkville’s fifth through eighth grade students. They will travel to Atlanta May 2-3, 2011. instead of March 2-3.
• Accepted a low bid of $120,007 from Constru-ction Specialty Associates for the re-roofing of the Technical Trade Building at Brewer High School.
• Accepted a proposal from ERG Environmental, not to exceed $2,700, to conduct the required AHERA three-year re-inspection to make school equipment compliant with the EPA and Safe State of Alabama requirements for asbestos accountability.
• Accepted a proposal from ERG Environmental to conduct revisions to the existing asbestos management plans and bring them in compliance with EPA’s AHERA, at a cost not to exceed $14,575.
• Approved a bid from Charter Communications to provide a light speed firewall network for schools at a cost of $20,900 per month for 36 months.
