Keith Harris appointed West Morgan principal
Morgan County School Board unanimously approved the appointment of Keith Harris as the new principal of West Morgan High School, effective Jan. 3, 2011, at its regular monthly meeting Dec. 9. He will follow in the footsteps of Bill Hopkins Jr.
Harris, who is serving under Hopkins as assistant principal of West Morgan Middle and High Schools, was recommended to the board by outgoing Superintendent Bob Balch. Hopkins will assume the superintendent’s post Jan 3. 2011.
Harris, 42, is a West Morgan High graduate and a former math teacher. He was the unanimous choice of a committee composed of coordinator Mary Marquart, teacher Brandi Ashby and parent Randy Wilson.
The board voted on other personnel items as follows:
•Approved a homebound contract for Brooke Thedford effective Nov. 2-30 or earlier with a doctor’s release.
• Approved a homebound contract for Emma White, effective Oct. 15 until Dec. 17, or earlier with the receipt of a doctor’s release.
• Approved a military leave of absence for Amber King, art teacher at Brewer and Falkville High Schools, effective Dec. 3.
• Rescinded a previous board action naming Andy Trotter as track and cross country coach at Brewer High School for the 2010-2011 school year. His name was submitted for consideration by mistake.
• Approved Kimberly Sue Cryer as CNP worker at Brewer High School, effective Dec. 10, to replace Linda McDermond who transferred.
• Approved a leave of absence without pay for Lori Oden, teacher at Brewer High School, effective Jan. 4, 2011, through May 28, 2011.
• Approved a family leave of absence without pay and a maternity leave of absence without pay for Lori Sparks, teacher at Danville-Neel Elementary School; effective Dec. 2 through Jan. 11, 2011.
• Approved Flaudie Ann Waldrop as part-time custodian at Eva School, effective Dec. 10. She is replacing Malenia Long who transferred.
• Approved an application for continued salary in lieu of sick leave for Stephanie Long, CNP worker at Eva School, effective for seven days, Nov. 10 through Nov. 19.
Long was injured on the job.
• Approved Leslie Aterburn as math team sponsor at Danville High School, effective Oct. 5. She is replacing Juanita Penn who resigned.
• Approved after-school contracts for Falkville Elementary School as follows: Chad Summerford, substitute; Gail Ayres, librarian; Valerie Williamson, tutor; Melissa Johnson, tutor; Len Williamson, supervisor; and Melissa Wright, aide.
• Approved continued salary in lieu of sick leave for Renee Hardin, CNP worker at Falkville High School, effective for 21 days, No. 11 through Dec. 17.
Hardin was injured on the job.
• Approved Steve Hopper as a countywide bus driver for Princeville Elementary School, effective Dec. 18 as a replacement for Ken Floyd who is retiring.
• Approved continued salary in lieu of sick leave for Debbie Easley, teacher at Priceville Elementary School for 13 days. Easley was injured on the job.
• Approved family medical leave of absence without pay and maternity leave of absence without pay for Holly Wood, teacher at Priceville Elementary School, effective Jan. 2, 2011, through Feb. 28, 2011.
• Accepted notice of retirement from William Johnson, assistant principal at Priceville High School, effective Dec. 31.
• Approved family medical leave of absence without pay for Robert Smith, custodian at Priceville Junior High School, effective Oct. 18 through Nov. 17.
• Approved Charleston Wilson as SPE teacher at Sparkman School, effective Jan. 3, 2011. She will replace Tracy Smith who resigned.
• Approved a leave of absence without pay for Janna Byrd, teacher at Sparkman School, effective Jan. 3, 2011, through May 31, 2011. She will be working with AMSTI as an elementary specialist.
• Accepted the resignation of Darlene Lambert as a bus driver for Sparkman School, effective Dec. 16 . She will retain her position as a countywide SPE support staff employee.
• Approved a catastrophe leave of absence for Jennifer Blocker, first grade teacher at Union Hill School, effective Jan. 3, 2011, through Jan. 14, 2011.
•Approved the transfer of Meredith DeeAnna Taylor Price from part-time CNP worker at West Morgan Elementary School to full-time CNP worker at the same school, effective Dec. 10.
She replaced Betty Watson who retired.
