Dec. 16, 1960-Local schools dismissed for Christmas vacation today. Classes will resume on Jan. 2, 1961.
Dec. 16, 1960-The Hartselle Athletic Booster Club held its annual banquet to fete members of the Tiger football team tonight. David Norwood was selected as the most valuable senior. Bob Cain emceed the event.
Dec. 16, 1960-This week’s meeting of the Thursday Afternoon Club was at the home of Mrs. L. H. Houston on Milner Street. Beautiful Christmas decorations throughout the residence made the occasion a festive one.
Dec. 16, 1960-Walter Stockton, Harold Johnson, Merrill Doss, and Ed Watson have returned home following a successful deer hunt near York.
Dec. 17, 1960—A loyal band of Alabama followers left Hartselle at 5 a.m. this morning to drive through to Houston, Texas, there to attend the Blue Bonnet Bowl game Saturday between the Crimson Tide and the University of Texas. The fans were Paul Lee, Dr. Bob Sittason, Robert Street, Charley Beene, and Coaches J. P. Cain and Brub Hamilton. (The game ended in a 3-3 tie, with the Crimson Tide and the Longhorns scoring only a single field goal.)
Dec. 17, 1960-Mrs. S. L. Sherrill returned today from a month’s tour in Europe. While on the continent, Mrs. Sherrill spent a week on the Riviera and also visited Capri.
Dec. 18, 1960-The choir of First Baptist Church presented their annual Christmas cantata tonight. “The Everlasting Light,” a Yuletide musicale, was performed at First Methodist under the direction of Mrs. Paul Kelly.
Dec. 19, 1960-A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Benard Chasteen today at Hartselle Hospital.
Dec. 20, 1960-Hartselle’s population has climbed to exactly 5,000. This means the city has gained 1,571 additional residents during the past decade, the 1950 population having been 3,429.
The population was 2,871 in 1940.
Dec. 21, 1960-A new building supply house, the Ray-Bailey Lumber Co., is constructing a warehouse and sales office on U.S. 31, about a quarter of a mile north of the 31-36 intersection.
Dec. 21, 1960-Patty Jane Montgomery will wed James R. Atherton on February 18, 1961, at Central Baptist Church in Decatur. The happy couple’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. John David Homer Montgomery of Hartselle and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mason Atherton of Owensboro, Ky.
Dec. 22, 1960-The City of Hartselle plans to vigorously enforce its law relating to parking. Officials have ordered a crackdown on offenders. Motorists are warned, for example, that if they park the wrong way they can expect to be fined.
Dec. 22, 1960-The Hartselle Manufacturing Co. is changing over to a semi-dress line from work pants. The plant is a subsidiary of Fly Manufacturing Co.
Dec. 22, 1960-Mrs. Opal C. Stewart is in Cary, N.C., the guest of daughter, Mrs. Dottie Lanier, and family. Bill Stewart of George Washington University, Washington, D.C., is also spending the holidays with the Laniers.
Dec. 22, 1960-Bob Orr of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., arrived today for a holiday visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Orr and family.
Dec. 22, 1960-The MCHS Tigers basketball team has done well in their last several games and have now begun a new three-skein victory streak.
They have successively defeated Coffee of Florence, Athens, and Falkville, the Blue Devils being beaten by the decisive margin of 82-44. Don Logan was the Tiger high scorer in that game with 13 points.
