Increase in flu cases reported
Officials with the Alabama Department of Public Health are reporting an increase in the number of flu cases in the state.
Alabama was reporting widespread flu activity in the last week of the year. During that time, the number of doctor visits attributed to those with flu-like symptoms increased from 11 percent to 16 percent. A typical seasonal activity would be around 4 percent.
There’s still time to receive a flu vaccination. Vaccines are offered at local drug stores and the county health department. Between July 1, 2008 and May 31, 2010, 53 deaths in the state were attributed to the flu, with most deaths seen in those 50 and older.
