Danville News
Massey Volunteer Fire Department responded to a house fire at 22 Freeman Road on Jan. 7 at 5 57 a.m. The fire was so far advanced when they arrived that they were unable to save the house but were able to save a camper and a truck parked nearby.
Fire engines No. 156 and No. 159 and rescue vehicle No. 456 and tanker No. 357 worked the fire. They used about 11,000 gallons of water.
The homeowners were asleep at the time. They were awakened by the family dog and were able to escape unharmed. They credited their dog with saving their lives.
The first firefighters to arrive on the scene reported that the structure was unsafe to enter. Fire fighters responding to the fire were Wayne Nisly, Norman Coblentz, Justin Tanner, Joe Yoder, Wilmer Schlabaugh, Phillip Coblentz, Ananias Hershberger and Dillon Kyle
The Massey Volunteer Fire Department held its annual meeting on Jan. 6 with a 98 percent member turnout.
Members voted Ananias Hershberger to a three-year term as a captain.
They also voted to purchase more work lights for engine No. 159 and talked about what new equipment they would like to install on a new brush fire truck that is in the making.
They also discussed a March ISO inspection, the result of which they hope will give the department a better ISO rating and enable homeowners to qualify for lower rates on homeowners insurance.
