Schools set makeup days
Hartselle students will have to make up four days they missed since Christmas due to a water pressure problem and a winter storm.
Low water pressure, resulting from a treatment plant shutdown by Decatur Utilities, caused schools to close Jan. 4. Snow and ice-covered streets, sidewalks, driveways and parking lots prompted them to cancel classes again Jan 10-12. Persistent sub-freezing temperatures slowed down the thaw and forced the schools to open late at 10 a.m. on both Jan. 13 and 14.
Dr. Mike Reed, superintendent of Hartselle City Schools, said he met with school principals to reschedule the lost school days.
“The changes will not affect graduation, which is scheduled on May 23 or the last day of school for students, which is scheduled on May 26,” Reed said. “We hope we can get through the remainder of the school year without any more bad weather disruptions.”
The changes they made were to conduct classes on April 22 and 29, which were designated on the calendar as weather makeup days. Classes will also be conducted Feb. 18, along with Teacher Professional Development and Feb. 21, a day originally designated as winter break.
