Fire destroys Barnett Chapel Church
Barnett Chapel Pentecostal Church in Somerville was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning.
“We got a call at 4:26 a.m. and the building was fully involved in smoke and flames when we arrived,” said Chief David Nelms of the Somerville Area Volunteer Emergency Services (S.A.V.E.S).
Only the walls of the concrete block and metal siding building were left standing when fire fighters extinguished the last embers of fire at 9 a.m.
“The building was too far gone to save when we arrived, Nelms said. “It’s a loss. We have a state fire marshal coming to conduct an investigation.”
S.A.V.E.S. dispatched two engine companies to fight the fire. Backup help came from Priceville, Oden Ridge, Cotaco and Florette.
