A look back
January 27, 1961—Hartselle State Rep. Bob Gilchrist met in Washington today with the new Secretary of Agriculture, Orville Freeman. He and others were concerned with the low price for cotton Alabama and other southern farmers are currently receiving. They also feel that cotton Alabama farmers are receiving planting allotments that are too small. Gilchrist, a Democrat, is the chairman of the Alabama Legislative Cotton Study Committee.
January 27, 1961—Today was the last day to submit bids to the Morgan County Superintendent of Education’s office to be considered to construct a gym-auditorium at MCTS. (The contract for building the new gym was awarded to Ray Childs Construction of Decatur. The Childs firm estimates it can build the new athletic facility for $53,000. The gym should be ready for use by the beginning of the next school year.)
January 28, 1961—Decatur beat MCHS 68-54 tonight to win the Morgan County basketball tournament. Despite the loss, Howard Vest, a star of the MCHS squad, was named to the all-county team. In an earlier semi-final game Saturday afternoon, MCHS had beaten Priceville 63-40.
January 28, 1961-Local fans not at Pettey gym for tonight’s tournament finals were paying close attention to their radios as Bama beat Auburn 71-66 in a basketball game that went into overtime when the score was tied at the end of regulation play. Larry Pennington was the leading scorer for the Tide with 26 points. Jimmy Fibbe had 20 points for AU. This was Bama’s first win over the War Eagles after eight straight losses. In a preliminary game, the Bama frosh beat the Baby Tigers 70-57.
January 29, 1961—The Rev. Odie Gregg, pastor of Salem Methodist Church, is currently conducting a study on “Christian Evangelism” as part of an Epworth Training Institute being held at Ninth Street Methodist in Decatur. Recreation sessions are being led by Wesley Bostick, youth minister at Hartselle First Methodist.
January 30, 1961—V. B. Ward, 46, Hartselle 3, was involved in an auto accident in Decatur early this morning. He collided with a Cullman driver at the intersection of Prospect Drive and 8th Avenue, but was not seriously injured.
January 31, 1961—Falkville Methodist Church is honoring Ronnie Holmes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Holmes, for his presence at Sunday school every Sunday for four straight years without a single absence.
February 1, 1961—Morgan County Tax Collector Price M. Bryant reminds would-be voters that today is the deadline for paying poll taxes if one expects to vote in any election held this year. The only exceptions are veterans and persons over 45 who don’t have to pay these taxes.
February 2, 1961—Joe Slate of Hartselle earned a perfect “A” average during the fall quarter at Athens College.
