County receives grant to upgrade voting places
Morgan County voters will see improvements in the places where they vote in 2012 thanks to a $150,309.77 Help Americans Vote Act (HAVA) grant.
The grant part of a $6.7 federal grant being handled by the Alabama Secretary of State’s office. Each county in the state is receiving a portion of the money based on the number of registered voters it has. Morgan county’s latest voter count is 65,942.
The Morgan County Commission acted to authorize Chairman Ray Long to execute an application for the non-match grant at its regular meeting on Tuesday.
“We’ll use the money for several things, all focused on making our voting precincts more accessible to the public,” said Morgan County Probate Judge Greg Cain. “For one thing we will replace our voting booths, which are 30 years old.”
“This is coming at a good time,” he added. “It going to allow us to make some needed improvements that are out of reach of our operating budget.”
Cain said he will implement the grant right away with the goal of having the improvements completed prior to the 2012 election year.
