Feb. 17, 1961—MCHS Principal J. C. Pettey is currently in Detroit, attending the annual convention of the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Feb. 17, 1961—An Alabama state senator is planning to introduce a bill to raise the pay of men who serve on juries from $6 to $10 per day. (Women are not allowed to serve on juries in Alabama.)
Feb. 17, 1961—Army Pfc. Wyrd R. Morrow, son of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Morrow, 404 Bethel St., recently participated with his fellow soldiers in Operation Winter Shield conducted in Mainz, Germany. Morrow is an assistant gunner in the armor company’s battery B. He is a graduate of Morgan County Training School.
Feb. 17, 1961—Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Powell have sold their home on Hartselle Mountain to a family planning to move here from Panama City, Fla.
Feb. 17, 1961—Cleo Thompson was seriously hurt tonight in a car wreck about one mile west of Hartselle on Highway 36 tonight. The accident occurred in the vicinity of the West Hartselle Baptist Church. Mr. Thompson was a pedestrian and was traveling in a westerly direction at the time he sustained his very serious injuries.
Feb. 18, 1961—Patty Jane Montgomery and James R. Atherton were married today at Central Baptist Church in Decatur. The new Mr. and Mrs. Atherton’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. John David Homer Montgomery of Hartselle and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mason Atherton of Owensboro, Ky.
Feb. 18, 1961—The re-enactment of the swearing-in of Jefferson Davis as president of the Confederacy took place in Montgomery today. The governors of Alabama, Mississippi, and Virginia were present for the re-enactment.
Feb. 18, 1961—An auto accident in Falkville tonight resulted in serious injury to two teens. The accident occurred when one of the teens made a left turn into the driveway of his home on County Road 55 and collided with an oncoming car.
Feb. 19, 1961—Scott Stone, who has been serving as acting president of Hartselle Chamber of Commerce since Charlie Beene recently moved to Anniston in connection with a work transfer, has now been formally elevated to the presidency for this year. He will be assisted by Dr. Bob Sittason, vice president. New directors are Spec Speake, Arthur Beene, Paul Lee, and Sam Minor. Rotating off the board are Ernest Maddox, Jack Hoffhaus and Ollie Camp.
Feb. 20, 1961—William L. Longshore, Jr., a Birmingham attorney, spoke at tonight’s meeting of the Morgan County Young Republican Club in Decatur. Longshore was the GOP candidate for governor in the 1958 election.
Feb. 20, 1961—Several nurses from both Hartselle Hospital and Block-Chandler were in Decatur tonight for a meeting of the local chapter of the Alabama State Nurses Association.
Feb. 21, 1961—The AEA Assembly of Delegates is asking the Alabama Legislature for a 10 percent pay raise when the new school year begins in September. The AEA is not strong politically so the fate of its recommendations is uncertain.
Feb. 22, 1961—Hartselle State Rep. Bob Gilchrist spoke in Decatur tonight to a cotton promotion meeting in Decatur that included dot only growers but ginners, warehousemen, bankers, farm agents, ASC agents, and many others interested in the economic interests of Morgan County.
Feb. 23, 1961—Recruit Richard D. Hogan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard T. Hogan, Danville, is currently undergoing Army basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C.
