Burleson Tea Party
Valentine event highlights unit of study on manners
If you’re a kindergarten student at F.E. Burleson Elementary School nothing’s better than to have your cake and eat it too.
That was the case on Friday, Feb. 11, as K-1 students were treated to a Valentine Tea Party, climaxing a unit of study on good manners.
Students dressed as adults and practiced what they had learned in the classroom by attending a banquet-style tea party stuffing themselves with scrumptious apple juice and finger foods.
The banquet room was decorated by parents using red valentine heart cutouts and red balloons suspended from the ceiling. Tables were dressed in theme tablecloths and plates of food were prepared ahead of time and ready for eating when the students took their seats.
The menu consisted of apple juice or water, a cake and a sandwich, potato chips and dip, grapes and chocolate-covered strawberries.
“We do a unit on etiquette every year,” said kindergarten teacher Laurie Lang. “It covers more than table manners; however, the tea party is an effective means of giving students a hands-on experience of putting into practice what we have taught in class.”
