Schools plan make-up days
Hartselle City Schools will make up its Feb. 9 inclement weather day on Saturday, Feb. 26.
Morgan County Schools will make up the day by extending its school calendar through June 3. The last day of school for students will be Thursday, June 2, and Teacher Work Day will be Friday, June 3.
Hartselle Schools Superintendent Mike Reed said the school system looked at several options including taking away a day from spring break or adding a school day to the end of the year.
However, Reed felt like going to school on Saturday was the best option.
“We needed another instructional day before our state-required exams,” Reed said. “If we added it on to the end of school, it would wind up being a non-instructional day. Going to school on Saturday will give us the day we needed before the exams.”
Currently, Hartselle City Schools have been closed for five school days, four for weather and one for city water problems.
Reed said the Saturday school day will be like a normal day with students and teachers reporting at their normal times and bus routes running as they would any weekday. He also added that it would not affect any sports teams that had games scheduled for that day.
“It will be treated the same as it is for a normal day,” Reed said. “I know this will cause an inconvenience as it does for any made up inclement weather day. We hope it doesn’t cause too many problems for students and teachers.”
The Morgan County School Board opted to tack on the lost day at the end of the school year after considering taking away a day of spring break or going to school on Saturday. The decision was made at a snow-delayed board meeting Tuesday night.
Currently, county schools have lost six days due to snow and ice.
