James Douglas Johnson
February 19, 2011
Funeral and burial service for James Douglas Johnson, 64, of Birmingham was Monday, February 21, at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church.
Mr. Johnson died Saturday, February 19, 2011. He was a native of Somerville and resided in Birmingham since 1997. He was the only child of Ruth Lurleen Johnson and Iley Maxwell Johnson, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Cotaco High School in 1964 and attended the University of Alabama, earning an accounting degree from the School of Commerce and Business Administration. He worked as a CPA in many aspects of accounting in private practice and controller in various companies. He retired in 2002 to become a full time grandfather and although easily defined as a ‘man’s man’, a tender loving spirit became fully exposed to his grandchildren. To them, “Dooga” was an expert fisherman, coach, confidant and encourager that never missed a practice, game or event. He was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather.
He was an active member of Lakeside Baptist Church in Birmingham and a previous member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Somerville.
He is survived by his grade school sweetheart and loving wife of 46 years, Brenda Day Johnson; a son, Ross Channing Johnson; a daughter, Jada Daye Johnson Christopher and husband Dr. Timothy Lee; three grandchildren, William Johnson Christopher, Luke Douglas Christopher and Bella Daye Christopher; two special aunts, Autice Culbreath and Iris Jackson.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation to the Big Oak Ranch or American Heart Association.
