Brewer cruises to regional finals
HANCEVILLE – Brewer held Lee-Huntsville to just two points in the second quarter as the Lady Patriots cruised to a 65-40 win the Class 5A Northwest Regional semifinals Tuesday morning in Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum.
Brewer will face the winner of Cullman-J.O. Johnson Friday at 9 a.m.
The two teams played pretty evenly through the first quarter, as Brewer led 18-15. However, the Lady Patriots turned up the defense in the second quarter. They outscored the Lady Generals 15-2 to take a commanding 33-17 lead a halftime. Lee only hit 1 of 8 shots in the period and missed all four of its free throws.
The onslaught continued as Brewer outscored Lee 16-5 in the third quarter to lead 49-22. Lee outscored Brewer in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t nearly enough.
Riley Northway led Brewer with 15 points and 6 rebounds while Rheagan Harvel and Hannah Crawford added 10 each. Crawford went 8-for-8 from the foul line.
Cheyenne Mclemore scored 8 followed by Savana Flack with 6, Danielle Dunn with 6, Caitlin Rush with 5, Courtney Oldacre with 3 and Caitlin Lavendar.
For the game, Brewer was outstanding in its free throw shooting, hitting 18 of 24 shots for 75 percent. On the other side, Lee was just 3-for-15 from the charity stripe.
Brewer held Lee to 29 percent from the field while the Patriots hit 39 percent of its shots. The Lady Patriots also had 14 assists on its 21 made shots.
