BOE approves 2011-2012 calendar
Students will have a few more vacation days this summer based on school calendars approved by the Hartselle school board on Monday night. They may also have the number of days they are required to attend school in 2011-12 reduced if the State Legislature decides to reduce that number from 180 to 175 days as a cost-cutting measure.
The 2011-12 calendar has the next school opening set for August 15, a week later than
opening day in 2010. The same opening date applies to a second calendar, which was approved for 2012-13
“If the Legislature takes away instructional days, the calendar will change,” said Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed.
“So parents would be wise to hold up making vacation plans until after the current legislative session is completed in June.
He explained that the calendars for the next two school years, which were prepared by a committee headed by Hartselle High Principal Jeff Hyche, were requested by the State Department of Education.
Other recommendations made by Superintendent Reed and approved by the board are listed as follows:
• Approved out-of-state field trips for the Hartselle High School Chamber Choir to go to Atlanta, Ga. March 3-4; Hartselle High School Performers and Ensemble to go to Atlanta April 29-30; and the Hartselle High School baseball team to go to Jackson Miss. March 4-5 and Germantown, Tenn. April 1-2.
• Approved revisions to Policy JBCB-R as it pertains to due dates for out-of-district student fees.
• Approved first reading of proposed revisions to Policy GBKA as it pertains to a reduction in support personnel, based on a model provided by the Alabama Association of School Boards.
