Support for sports is best I’ve seen
In many towns that I’ve lived in, football was the only sport that everyone cared about.
That’s definitely not true here in Hartselle.
All of the schools take a heavy interest in all sports. It doesn’t matter if it’s basketball, soccer or tennis, the community cares about the entire sports program at each of the schools we cover up here.
That’s why we’ll see packed out gymnasiums for basketball or why we’ll see heaters lined up along the fences at baseball and softball games. (Although I can’t remember a year that the high school baseball opening day was comfortable like it was this year.)
That’s one of the reasons why the Hartselle Enquirer does preview sections for a majority of high school sports. In today’s edition, for example, we have a preview section for baseball and softball.
One thing that surprised me is how successful Hartselle has been over the years. I knew about the recent championship two years ago, but I didn’t realize Hartselle has been a dominant baseball power since 1990. Hartselle’s softball program has even won its share of state championships.
And if you go back far enough, Falkville has a state championship trophy for softball, albeit in the days before fastpitch softball.
Publishing this baseball and softball preview has been a learning experience for me and I’m looking forward to a great spring season.
