Mother seeks supplies for war zone soldiers
The mother of a young soldier who is serving in his second war zone deployment will host a “Support the Troops” multicultural event in Falkville this weekend as a means of collecting personal items for shipment to Afghanistan.
Teresa Carpenter is asking anyone who wants to attend to donate at least three items for the personal use of her son, Specialist Nick Lindsey, and members of his company of approximately 50 combat soldiers. The first shipment is anticipated later this month.
The event will be held at South Park on Culver Road from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the event of rain, it will be moved to VFW Post 10774, also located on Culver Road.
Items requested include snacks, drink mixes, sheets, pillows and personal hygiene product.
Carpenter’s son, 24, enlisted in the regular Army in 2008 after serving a tour of duty in Iraq with an Alabama National Guard unit. Both he and his mother are members of the Cherokee Indian Tribe of Northeast Alabama.
“This is a great opportunity for people to show their support for soldiers who are serving in Afghanistan,” Carpenter stated, and enjoy good entertainment at the same time.”
The entertainment will feature a Native American Pow Wow, JD Edge, a country singer and songwriter from Nashville, Tenn., Dixie Breeze Bluegrass Banks from Double Springs, Izzy Miller and Smokin’ Joe of Huntsville and the Sacred Heart singers from Blount County.
Carpenter encouraged attendees to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Food vendors will be available.
Carpenter said Saturday’s event would be the second “Support the Troops” event she has been associated with.
“We hosted a Native American Pow Wow in 2007 in support of a Cullman-based National Guard unit, which was serving in Iraq. “We had about 2100 people come. and we expect more this Saturday.”
There is no admission charge to the event; however, each person who attends is invited to donate three items for the soldiers in Afghanistan.
