We can help our school children
One of the opportunities that I have by being a member of Hartselle Kiwanis Club is participating in the RIF program. RIF stands for Reading is Fundamental. We as a civic club agree to provide funds to purchase books for children as well as read to them on a regular basis through the RIF The Hartselle club does this through the local Head Start Program on Bethel Street.
Last Friday was chosen as one of the days that we would read to the children. We had four people who went over to the school to participate. The children were excited that we were there and were very well behaved. The group that I worked with was very lively and asked lots of questions. We read a book about a family grocery shopping and then preparing a meal.
Each member of the family helped in the selection and enjoyed the food. Of course when a different item was chosen varying comments from the group would occur. I like carrots; I don’t like carrots for example. But the best part was the look on the children’s faces as the books were read to them.
They really enjoyed hearing the words as well as looking at the artwork in the books. It always gives you a good feeling to see the smiles on their faces and the gleam in their eyes and is well worth the small amount of time required to read to the classes.
The teachers and volunteers at Hartselle Head Start are to be commended for the work they do with the students. The classes are always under control, the children are well behaved, and very mannerly. It is a credit to all involved that this program is available to local children. Beginning a love for learning at such a young age can make such a difference in the lives of many.
Instilling in them a love for books and reading can influence the attitude they have for learning far into their future. Looking for an area to get involved with check with the Hartselle Kiwanis Club or Hartselle Head Start, both are always open to new members and volunteers.
