Sonoco looks to add plant in Hartselle
The City of Hartselle appears like it will land another manufacturing facility.
On Tuesday, the Hartselle City Council will decide if it will approve a tax abatement for Sonoco Products, which is planning to build a new manufacturing facility next to its wood reels plant in the Hartselle-Morgan County Industrial Park.
Mayor Dwight Tankersley said the company decided to locate this facility here after a fire destroyed one of the company’s facilities in Louisiana.
“I received a call (Thursday morning) from the Morgan County Economic Development Alliance asking us to add the tax abatement to our agenda for Tuesday’s meeting,” Tankersley said. “This plant will cost about $4.6 million and will add 28 jobs. That will mean close to $1 million a year in payroll.”
Tankersley said he didn’t know how much the abatement will cost the city at this time, but he said those details will be released at the 7 p.m. meeting on Tuesday by City Attorney Larry Madison and the Morgan County EDA.
Sonoco Products currently owns wood and metal reel plants in Hartselle. The wood reel plant is located on John D. Long Drive and the metal reel plans is located on Highway 31 South.
Tankersley said the new plant, which would build roll plugs, would use waste products from the reel facility as fuel.
