A look back
One of Hartselle’s most beautiful, generous, and community-oriented citizens passed away recently. Family and a host of friends are mourning the loss of Mrs. Betty Palmer Parker.
May 30, 1935—Mr. And Mrs. Lee Palmer are the proud parents of a new baby girl born today. They have named her Betty Elaine.
April 30, 1936—Mrs. Lee Palmer and baby Betty of Marion are visiting her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Frank Smith, here.
July 18, 1935—Lee Palmer will leave Marion soon to join his wife, Lucile, and baby, Betty Elaine, here.
July 4, 1940—Lee and Lucile Palmer and daughter, Betty, are currently vacationing in Florida.
March 3, 1941—Lucile Palmer and Opal Stewart will lead the Hartselle elementary PTA during the next school year. Lucile’s daughter is Betty and Opal has her daughters Dottie and Susan enrolled at the school.
June 29, 1944—Lee and Lucile Palmer and daughter, Betty, are visiting parents and grandparents in Hamilton.
Jan, 25, 1945—Betty Palmer played “Betty’s Wooden Shoe Dance” at this evening’s meeting of the Juvenile Music Study Club.
Jan, 11, 1948—Lee R. Palmer, owner of the Western Auto Associates Store, left today to attend the Western Auto spring merchandise show in Memphis.
Dec. 24, 1948—Mrs. Lee Palmer was involved in decorating the First Baptist Church this afternoon for tonight’s cantata. She was assisted by her daughter Betty.
Aug. 17, 1950—Work was started this week on a new six-room home for Lee, Lucile, and Betty Palmer. The site is on High School street, a 150 feet frontage which the Palmers bought from Mrs. Alma Fricke Hough.
March 26, 1951—Betty Palmer hosted her Baptist G.A. group at a social this afternoon.
Nov. 15, 1951—The question of the week at MCHS is “where did Betty Palmer get those dimples?”
May 15, 1952 —Mr. and Mrs. Lee Palmer and daughter Betty enjoyed a camping trip to Joe Wheeler State Park over the past weekend.
March 26, 1952—The junior class at MCHS presented a play, “Finders’ Creepers,” tonight in Riddle auditorium. The undoubted star of the cast was Betty Palmer.
Jan, 8, 1953—Betty Palmer and Ann Sample are delighting their schoolmates with the MCHS column now being published in each issue of the Enquirer.
Jan, 6, 1954—Betty Palmer and Robert Peck co-hosted the MCHS class of ’53 reunion held at Robert’s home tonight.
Jan, 7, 1954—Betty Palmer has returned to Marion to resume her studies at Judson College after spending the holidays with homefolks.
June 10, 1954—Betty Palmer has accepted a position with the S.C.S. department in the county agent’s office. The young Judson college student will begin work Monday morning and will continue her duties throughout the summer.
April 14, 1955—Betty Palmer and Susan Stewart of Birmingham-Southern college were Easter weekend guests of their parents here.
Aug. 13 1955—Mrs. Ollie Roan and Mrs. Lee Palmer and daughter, Betty, left today for a vacation in the Great Lakes region.
Dec. 22, 1958—The MCHS class of 1953 held their annual reunion at the home of Betty Palmer tonight. Betty showed films of the World’s Fair, Brussels, Belgium, Switzerland, Holland, France, and other European countries where she visited this past summer.
Sept. 25, 1975—Betty Parker is now director of volunteer services at Pineview Hospital.
Sept. 27, 1983—Betty Palmer Parker is Hartselle’s new city clerk. (She served for 17 years before retiring in 2000, one of the longest serving clerks in the city’s history.)
March 8, 2011—Betty Elaine Palmer Parker died at age 75.
