Police look for Walmart theft suspects
The Hartselle Police Department is currently investigating a theft of more than $4,500 at Walmart on March 5 while numerous customers were inside the store.
Lt. Justin Barley, public information officer for Hartselle Police, said the crime happened at 3:50 p.m. Saturday, March 5, during the busiest time of the day.
Barley said two black women, described as being in their 30s or 40s, entered Walmart through the front door, went to the clothing section, picked up an item of clothing and went to empty checkout lanes.
“The two women used a key to open the cash drawer and stole the large bills,” Barley said. “None of the employees have seen them before. None of the customers noticed what was happening.”
Barley said the suspects raided the cash drawers once a clerk went on break. The women took the money and left the store.
They left the store in a white car, which was being driven by a black man.
Walmart managers finally noticed the money missing when they counted the cash at the end of the day and it didn’t add up.
According to surveillance video, it took the two women just 7 minutes to complete the theft from when they entered the store. Barley said investigators believe the women are using one key to access the cash drawers.
“It was a busy time for Walmart,” Barley said. “A lot of registers were open and they just slid around and nobody noticed… They were pretty brave.”
Barley said similar incidents to this one have occurred in Georgia, but he wasn’t aware if it had occurred before in the area.
Hartselle Police are asking anyone with information on this incident or any of the three suspects to call 256-751-4915.
