Hartselle struggles in Tennessee
After sweeping Brewer March 31, Hartselle’s baseball team went 2-3 against competition in Tennessee.
Hartselle lost to Dryer County and Houston on Friday, lost to Collierville Saturday morning and won its final two games against Spain and Bartlett.
Houston 7, HHS 6
After scoring six runs in the first inning, the Tigers couldn’t muster one more run as Houston chipped away and tied the game in the sixth inning.
Back-to-back hits and a throwing error on the pitcher allowed Houston to take the win.
In the first inning, Hartselle loaded the bases with two hits and a walk. Zach Letson and Deacon Aldridge both scored when Kaleb Jones and Chris Brown reached on errors.
Dax Gillespie singled in Kaleb Jones. Will Swann then had a two-run homer.
After that, however, Hartselle only mustered two base runners the rest of the way. Hunter McCaghren took the losss.
Collierville 11, HHS 1
Hartselle’s lone run came when Todd Gibson collected a double and came home on Tyler Phillips’ base hit.
The only other batters to get hits were Austin Spangler and Jones.
Collierville scored seven runs in the second inning to take control and defeat Hartselle in five innings. Paul Johnson had three strikeouts in the loss.
Dryer Co. 12, HHS 8
Hartselle picked up 11 hits, but it wasn’t enough to beat Dryer County.
Colton Ord, Letson and Jones went 2-for-3 while Gibson and Drew Cowan were both 2-for-4. Swann had the other hit.
Jones and Gillespie scored twice while Letson, Spangler, Gibson and Ord scored once. Gibson had three RBIs followed by Letson with two RBIs.
Chase Nelson took the loss, but Aaron Wooley collected five strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings of work.
HHS 11, Spain 7
Hartselle scored seven runs in the first inning and later broke a tie by scoring four runs over the final two innings to get the win.
Ord earned the win but allowed three runs, which took the win away from starting pitcher Aldridge. Wooley pitched three scoreless innings with two strikeouts to collect the save.
Jones led the Tigers with 2-for-3 hitting with two runs scored while Gillespie was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Ord added a home run and three RBIs.
Spangler, Cowan, Brown, Swann and Gibson got hits. Brown also had two RBIs.
HHS 8, Bartlett 1
Gillespie went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a home run to lead the Tigers. Chris Brown also went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs.
Ord, Letson, Spangler, Cowan and Jones all had base hits. Swann drew two walks and scored both times while Ord, Gibson and Jones all scored.
Jackson Smith took the win allowing no runs on two hits and seven strikeouts with only one walk. Jacob Garrison allowed a run on one hit and two walks with a pair of strikeouts.
