Nance takes first-team all-state honors
Danville High School senior Ashley Nance, post player on the Lady Hawks Class 3A state runner-up basketball championship team, was recently honored as a Class 3A all-state player by the Alabama Sportswriters Association.
She is slated to sign a letter of intent to play basketball for Wallace State Community College April 8.
Her previous senior honors consisted by being named to the Class 3A All-State final four team, and most valuable player in the Morgan County Basketball Tournament and the Northeast Alabama Regional Tournament.
“I felt a lot was expected of me in my senior year and I felt pretty comfortable in that role,” Nance stated, “but I didn’t anticipate making the 3A all-tournament team. It was exciting to get the honor, but I would feel a lot better if we had been able to win that last game and bring home a state title.”
“I always said I wanted to be prepared to go on to the college level,” she added, “but that now means I’ll have to grow up and become a better player.”
Nance is a four-year starter who scored over 1,900 points in her high school career She also collected over 1,200 rebounds.
As a senior she led her team in scoring with 19.4 points per game and averaged 8.5 rebounds per game. She also led her team in steals and made 63 percent of her field goal attempts.
“She was a very durable player who brought a lot of energy to the game,” said head coach Paul Wilson. “She was also a very talented player who developed good moves in the post and shot the ball well in traffic.”
