Tennis picks up wins
Hartselle’s boys tennis team earned wins against Athens and Decatur while the girls tennis team went 1-1 last week.
On March 31, the boys team beat Athens 5-4. Chris Schaffer held off Nick Boswell 10-8 to win. Landin Henderson defeated Scott Garrett in a 10-6 win. Thomas Fleischman breezed through a 10-3 win.
Patrick Connell went to a tiebreaker with Karis Hackman before falling 11-10 (2). Kyle St. Amand and Brandon McNutt also lost 10-5 and 10-4, respectively.
In doubles, St. Amand and Schaffer were leading 7-1 when their opponents retired. Henderson and Fleischman won 10-2. Connell and McNutt lost 11-9.
The girls swept Athens 9-0. They were led by near perfect matches from Nicholle Smith and Ivana Ellis, who each won 10-0.
Shelley Scarbrough also made quick work of Athens’ No. 1 10-3. Maela Lanier defeated Samantha Biggs 10-4 while Elizabeth Connell defeated the No. 2 10-5.
Becca Latham broke Sydney Powers’ serve late to earn a tough 11-9 win.
In doubles, Scarbrough and Nicholle Smith earned a 10-3 win. Elizabeth Connell and Lanier won 10-2 win while Ellis and Latham won 10-5.
Against Decatur, the boys team won 8-1. McNutt took down Rowe Price 6-1, 6-0 while St. Amand won 6-1, 6-1.
Thomas Fleishman beat Reid Cawthen 6-4, 6-1 while Schaffer downed Jack Duffy 6-1, 6-2. Alex Pettey added a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Patrick Connell and McNutt had to go to a tiebreaker to win 4-6, 6-1, 10-5. St. Amand and Schaffer beat Grisham and Cauthen 6-1, 6-1 while Pettey and Fleischman beat Duffy and Rogers by the same score.
Hartselle’s girls fell to Decatur 8-1. Nichole Smith won her match 7-6 (3), 6-4.
The Hartselle boys JV team defeated Decatur 8-0. Noah Holladay didn’t lose a game while Carson Blankenship won 12 of 13 games. Josh Rhodes won 6-1, 6-1. Jack Slate won 10-0. Grant Shelton also won 10-1. In doubles, Blankenship and Slate got the straight-sets win 6-2, 6-3 while Holladay and Anders won 6-0, 6-2.
