Gymnast to compete in south regional
Keely Templeton, a seventh grader at Danville Middle School, is in hot pursuit of her dream to play one day for the University of Alabama national championship gymnastics team.
Keely took a step in that direction March 25-27 when she came in second in her age division at state competition in Huntsville and earned a trip to Marietta, Ga. to compete in the South Regionals April 7-8. As a 13-year-old, she will compete in level 8 against state champions from Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Keely started training in gymnastics at the age of five and is currently a student at Calvin Twisters Gymnastics in Decatur. She trains 17 1/2 hours each week and is especially skilled in the vault. Her score in this event was the second highest in the state meet.
The Crimson Tide gymnastics program ranks at the top among Keely’s list of favorites, with Georgia coming in second. The two universities are currently ranked first and second, respectively, in the nation.
Keely’s parents are Gary and Bobbie Templeton of Danville.
