HHS Fishing Club qualifies two for state
Four members of Hartselle High School’s Fishing Club have qualified to compete in the State Championship Fishing Tournament at Ingall’s boat ramp in Decatur on May 21.
Kyle Lybarger and Grant Shelton qualified for the tournament by finishing eighth in a high school fishing tournament in Decatur on March 19 and Brad Vice and Tanner Phillips qualified by placing fifth in a tournament at Logan Martin Lake in Pell City on April 2.
Six other members of the fishing club participated in both tournaments. They are Aaron Hensley, Barrett Jones, Justin Thompson, Joseph McAnally, Ethan Rose and Luke Chaffee.
The club will have the opportunity to land another berth in the state tournament on April 23 when it competes in the Cooter’s Pond Tournament on the Alabama River in Prattville.
Club members fish in pairs with a boat captain while competing in tournaments and placement is determined by the weight of the catch. At the tournament on Logan Martin Lake, 100 boats were entered.
“Everybody caught fish,” said Charles Clemons. a volunteer coach for the Hartselle club. “That’s good when you consider that bass are in transition now. They’ll bite better after the spawning season is over.”
